Type 2 diabetes accunts for over 95% of all diabetes. In type 2 diabetes, either the body does not make enough insulin or the cells cannot use it the way they should. Insulin is a hormone made by our pancreas that allow our bodies to use the sugar or glucose from the food that we eat. Glucose is the main energy source or fuel for the cells in our body. Insulin is what transports this energy or glucose into the cells. If our bodies do not make enough insulin or cannot use the insulin we make, the glucose buids up in our blood. When glucose builds up in our blood instead of going into our cells, our bodies cannot get their main enrgy source. High glucose levels in the blood over a long period of time begin to cause damage to the eyes, kidneys, nerves, heart, and blood vessels.
